In September 2023, Casa da Arquitetura - Centro Português de Arquitetura in Porto hosted the second edition of ‘Build - From High to Low Tech’. This international conference aims to challenge the dominant perspectives and thinking on the use of materials and technology in architecture.

During the Build conference, Milan-based architecture, interior design and urban planning studio Park Associati organised a two-day ‘Hempcrete Workshop’ in collaboration with Natura Matéria (a sustainable construction consultancy and spin-off brand from the University of Minho).

The workshop explored the potential of hempcrete to provide an innovative low-tech bio-based materials solution for use in future construction. Participants used hemp concrete blocks to create ‘Tatu’, a small outdoor pavilion designed by Park Associati.

The blocks produced by Cânhamor and which you can buy from Natura Matéria are an innovative solution of bio-based materials for use in construction.

According to Park Associati, the pavilion’s design was inspired by the ancient giardino Pantesco, a circular garden from the small Italian island of Pantelleria that creates its own microclimate by protecting a single tree. Park Associati further explains that: ‘Tatu took the form of a semicircle made of hemp bricks, protecting a single plant to symbolise our natural biosphere.’ The Park Plus team and the studio’s Design Technology group worked on the concept for the project, part of which demonstrated how a parametric approach can make low-tech construction more efficient.

At the event there was also the opportunity to make hemp concrete mixes and apply FRADICAL mortars for bonding blocks and plasters.
