Development
The aim of the training was to acquire basic knowledge about hemp concrete, its properties and potential for use in construction. In the practical course, a prototype wooden wall was made and moulded, filled with a mixture of hemp shavings, lime and clay.
Faced with the reality that most building materials used to achieve good levels of energy efficiency:
- are derived from petrochemicals, which are dangerous, toxic, polluting and non-biodegradable;
- depend on adhesives, sealants and membranes that are synthetic, toxic, aggravate health problems and make dismantling almost impossible;
- most of the materials and resources used in construction are non-renewable;
- most building materials use significant amounts of energy in their production.
Hempcrete is considered an alternative material for bio-construction due to its unique characteristics.
